Residential and commercial structures currently contribute approximately 58 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto. This is predominantly a result of the combustion of fossil fuels, primarily natural gas, for heating and hot water purposes. Embracing heat pump technology emerges as a notably efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional heating systems. While certain heat pump models can effectively serve as replacements for both furnaces and air conditioners, it is advisable to initiate a conversation with your HVAC contractors and/or Energy Advisor for personalized guidance and recommendations tailored to your specific requirements.
WHAT IS HEAT PUMP?
The heat pump is a heating and cooling device that can be used in place of conventional heaters and air conditioners, adjusting its output to the ambient temperature. Heat pumps are intended to move heat energy against the management of natural heat flow. A heat pump uses a little amount of outer high-grade power to achieve the desired transportation of thermal energy from thermal source to a heat sink.
When a heat pump is utilized for heating, it uses the same essential refrigeration-type cycle which is put to use by air conditioner or a refrigerator but in the opposite direction, releasing heat into the accustomed space rather than the immediate situation. In this exercise, heat pumps usually draw thermal energy from the cooler outer air or from the earth.
HOW HEAT PUMP WORKS?
During the summer, a heat pump works like an air conditioner, extracting heat from the air within your home. When winter arrives, the heat pump seamlessly reverses its operation to deliver heating. Essentially operating like an air conditioner or refrigerator, a heat pump has undergone enhancements to facilitate both cooling and heating functions.
Both air conditioners and heat pumps share fundamental components:
- A condenser, responsible for rejecting heat.
- An evaporator, tasked with absorbing heat.
- A compressor, designed to elevate the temperature.
Distinguishing itself from a standard air conditioner, a heat pump incorporates a reversing valve. This crucial component enables the pump to move heat in either direction—into the home for heating or out of the home for cooling, ensuring versatile climate control throughout the year.

IS A HEAT PUMP MORE EXPENSIVE THAN AN AIR CONDITIONER AND FURNACE?
A heat pump has a higher installation cost, but it can heat and cool your house. The government has raised the subsidy for installing a heat pump to $7,100, a substantial reduction in expense. A heat pump is a mechanical device that transfers heat from one place to another by use of electrical energy. It has the potential to significantly reduce long-term energy expenditures.
WHY SWITCH TO A HEAT PUMP FOR HEATING/COOLING
Environmentally Friendly: Heat pumps significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to natural gas furnaces, as electricity, particularly in Ontario, is a cleaner and more sustainable fuel source.
Highly Efficient: Heat pumps excel in efficiency, providing over three times the heating energy output for the same energy consumption when compared to traditional furnaces and boilers.
Cost-Effective Solution: The ongoing rise in natural gas rates, driven by carbon pricing, makes heat pumps a financially prudent choice. Additionally, by adopting a heat pump, you can take advantage of new electricity pricing structures, including anticipated reductions in certain time-of-use rates. Various grants and incentives are also available to assist with installation costs.
Proven Reliability: With over 180 million units in use worldwide, heat pumps have proven themselves as a trusted and reliable heating solution. As the global community confronts the escalating climate crisis and natural gas rates continue to climb, heat pumps will play an increasingly vital role in mitigating environmental impact.
